How to make coding accessible to everybody

Coding, like science, can have a bit of a steep learning curve. There are many online learning solutions, but if you're not enrolled in a real-time course (with an accessible instructor), running into problems can be tough.

When you post code questions online it can feel like you're shouting into the void.

Then you have to wait while twiddling your thumbs for somebody to answer. And what if you have several questions?

It's not as though coding itself isn't exhilirating - think about the feeling you got with your first Hello World! .

I want to help people experience more "Hello World!" ๐Ÿ˜ƒ:smiley: moments and less "Hulk Smash!" ๐Ÿ˜ก moments with coding. This is why the ๐Ÿ’ป Vancouver Code Projects group was created.

We're a group of coders with varying abilities from varying backgrounds. We're based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ, but we have members from all over the world. Some things we do have in common:

  • we like to learn
  • we help each other fix bugs
  • we don't believe in stupid questions

We're a chapter of Codecademy, but anybody can join us. So far, we've hosted events on topics like How to collaborate with GitHub, How to build your own portfolio website and a Python classes live coding session.

We record our sessions and make them available on YouTube, along with the slides. We also have a discord server where we can ask each other questions and learn about upcoming events.

The key to learning is keeping things interactive and staying engaged.

This is the goal of Vancouver Code Projects. Please join us and see what you can learn!

Moving forward, this blog will serve to summarize our events, provide resources to our members and flesh out ideas that we have discussed on our discord server.
